Weston, FL, October 18, 2007 – More than 300 students from The Sagemont School in Weston will be collecting
pennies this December in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Dubbed
“Pennies From Heaven,” this month-long collection will be kicked off with a November 30th reading of “Kyle’s
First Playdate”, a children’s love story written by Weston author and Sagemont parent, Leah Orr.
According to Orr, the beautiful girl featured in her story is not a fictional character -- it’s Orr daughter, Sagemont
pre-K student Ashley Elizabeth, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) prior to birth. “I wanted to share
the joy and importance of young love and great friendship, while at the same time briefly addressing a disease that
affects many children as well as adults all over the world,” said Orr, who was recently nominated with her
husband as one of Florida’s Finest Couples from the CF Foundation. “The books will be available for sale through
the school and all proceeds will be donated to the CF Foundation.”
Following the book reading assembly, Sagemont students will officially start the “Pennies From Heaven”
collection and drop their donations in special Teddy Bear jugs, conveniently located in each classroom.
“Our students continue to have a profound impact on their community with their commitment and dedication to
‘Pennies From Heaven’” said Joann Laskin, Principal of The Sagemont School, Lower School Campus. “We are
honored to support the CF Foundation and knowing that we are also helping out a student and her family is extra
special. Their passion for this program is truly inspiring.”
Assisting charitable causes is nothing new for The Sagemont School. For the last few years the school has been
instrumental in raising tens of thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. According
to Laskin, this year they are adding the “Pennies From Heaven” collection as Orr’s youngest daughter is now
enrolled in the school. “It just made ‘cents!’” noted Laskin.
Teddy Bear collection jugs will also be placed in the lobby for area residents that wish to donate their pennies.
Culminating the month-long collection, Orr will join several Sagemont students at Joe DiMaggio Hospital to
donate a collection of her books, Kyle’s First Crush, and Kyle’s First Playdate, over to Lotsi The Clown to give
to the sick children when admitted to the hospital.
