Russian Countess Sophia and her family find refuge in Shanghai in 1936. She supports the family by working as a bar girl and taxi dancer, but forms an alliance with a former diplomat, owner of an elegant bar. Their relationship blossoms until they are caught in the fall of the city to the Japanese invasion. Starring Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave, Natasha Richardson, and Ralph Fiennes. It is the last of the 28 Merchant/Ivory films and is directed by James Ivory.
